Compliance e-learning for cafes, dental practices and shops

Most of Beagle HR's clients run a cafe or restaurant, a dental practice or a shop, so that is who the courses were written for. Here is what each type of business needs to give its staff, which Beagle Learning course covers it, and roughly how long it takes.

Cafes, restaurants and hospitality

High staff turnover, young workers, hot surfaces, heavy deliveries and, often, alcohol. The priority is getting a new starter through the basics before their first solo shift, then keeping the record straight as people come and go.

Not covered here: food hygiene, which needs an accredited Level 2 course, and first aid.

Recommended courses

Selling alcohol? Add Think 25 for everyone on the till or the bar.

Dental practices

Clinical training is set by the regulator and the professional bodies; this is the rest. A practice holds sensitive patient records, uses sharps every day, and has reception and admin staff who spend the day at a screen. The practice manager usually carries the whole training record alone, which is exactly what Beagle Learning takes off them.

Not covered here: infection control, radiography, safeguarding, medical emergencies and CPR, which need the CPD your regulator recognises.

Recommended courses

Shops and retail

Stock arrives on pallets, goes up on shelves from a set of steps and is sold across a counter to the public, sometimes including alcohol, knives or solvents. Part time and weekend staff need the same training as everyone else, and they need it in a form they can do on a phone before a Saturday shift.

Recommended courses

Age restricted products? Add Think 25 for everyone on the till.

Common questions

What training does a cafe need to give staff?

A health and safety induction on day one, fire safety, manual handling for anyone lifting deliveries and stock, and dignity at work training covering bullying and sexual harassment. If alcohol is sold, age restricted sales training as well. Food hygiene training sits alongside these and is usually done through a separate accredited course.

What training does a dental practice need to give staff?

Beyond the clinical training the regulator expects, every member of staff needs a health and safety induction, fire safety, sharps and needles awareness, data protection for patient records, and dignity at work training. Reception and admin staff who work at a screen need display screen equipment training, and practice managers benefit from mental health at work for managers.

What training does a shop need to give staff?

A health and safety induction, fire safety, manual handling for stock and deliveries, working at height where staff use steps or ladders in the stockroom, and dignity at work training. Shops selling alcohol, knives, solvents or other age restricted products need Think 25 training for everyone on the till.

Does online training count as compliance training?

For awareness level topics it does, as long as the content is relevant to the workplace and you keep a record. Beagle Learning records every pass with the learner, course, score and date, emails the manager and exports the record when an inspector, insurer or solicitor asks.

How long does each course take?

Between 20 and 30 minutes on a phone, tablet or computer, ending with a ten question assessment. Staff can do a course on a break or before a shift, with no account to create.

Can the training be tailored to our business?

Yes. Each course has local arrangements, such as who the fire wardens are or where the accident book is kept, that Beagle HR fills in for each client. Beagle HR also writes bespoke courses for clients who need something specific.
